Built in 1917 by Société des Automobiles Renault this early tank was seen at the Musee des Blindes, Saumur, France in June 2018.
The FT17 was fitted with a 37 mm Puteaux SA18 short-barreled gun, an example of which can be seen next the the tank.
Over 3,000 Renault FT tanks were manufactured by French industry, most of them during 1918.
The Renault FT's configuration – crew compartment at the front, engine compartment at the rear, and main armament in a revolving turret, became, and remains to this day, the standard layout of Main Battle Tanks (MBT's).
As such, some historians of armoured warfare have called the Renault FT the world's first modern tank.
