A main battle tank (MBT), also known as a battle tank , is a self-propelled armoured fighting vehicle, capable of heavy firepower, primarily from a high muzzle velocity direct fire main gun that is required to engage armoured and other targets. MBT's have a high cross-country mobility, a high level of self-protection and they are not generally designed and equipped to transport combat troops. They were originally conceived to replace the light, medium, heavy and super-heavy tanks of the WW2 era. Development was spurred on during the latter part of the Cold War with the development of composite armour at UK's R&D facility located at the Military Vehicle Engineering Establishment (MVEE) Chertsey, Surrey.
